Sinopsis
Inglaterra, principios del siglo XX. Años antes de que estalle la Primera Guerra Mundial, las mujeres exigen sus derechos políticos, más concretamente el derecho a votar. Las sufragistas inglesas están divididas entre las que defienden las protestas pacíficas, y las que luchan contra el gobierno sin piedad.
En esta historia sobre los primeros movimientos feministas, encontramos a Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), una joven luchadora de la clase obrera, explotada en una lavandería desde niña. Al ver que su protesta de manera pacífica no tiene resultados, Maud decide radicalizarse hasta el punto de utilizar la violencia para forzar el cambio y conseguir el derecho al voto. En su lucha por la dignidad y la de sus compañeras, la joven no pondrá solamente en riesgo su trabajo, su familia y su hogar, sino también su propia vida.
Dirigida por Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane), y escrita por Abi Morgan (The Invisible Woman, La dama de hierro), Sufragistas cuenta con un reparto formado por Carey Mulligan (El gran Gatsby, A propósito de Llewyn Davis, Drive), Helena Bonham Carter (Los Miserables, El discurso del rey), Meryl Streep (Ricki, Deuda de honor) y Anne-Marie Duff (No confíes en nadie, Parade’s End).
Synopsis
England, early 20th century. Years before World War I broke out, women demanded their political rights, more specifically the right to vote. English suffragists are divided between those who defend peaceful protests, and those who fight mercilessly against the government. In this story about the first feminist movements, we find Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), a young fighter of the working class, exploited in a laundry since childhood. Seeing that his protest peacefully has no results, Maud decides to radicalize to the point of using violence to force change and get the right to vote. In her struggle for the dignity and that of her companions, the young woman will not only put her work, her family and her home at risk, but also her own life.
Directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane), and written by Abi Morgan (The Invisible Woman, The Iron Lady), Sufragistas has a cast formed by Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby, About Llewyn Davis, Drive), Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech), Meryl Streep (Ricki, Debt of Honor) and Anne-Marie Duff (Trust No One, Parade’s End).
